 Al Ain Zoo

Al Ain Zoo is one of the oldest and most renowned zoos in the United Arab Emirates, located in the city of Al Ain, which is about 1.5 hours from Dubai, near the border with Oman. Founded in 1968, the zoo covers 900 hectares and is home to over 4,000 animals, including many rare and endangered species from the Arabian Peninsula and around the world. The zoo is not only a place for wildlife conservation but also an educational and research center focused on protecting biodiversity and promoting environmental awareness.

Wildlife Conservation Focus

  • Al Ain Zoo is dedicated to preserving endangered species, particularly those native to the Arabian Peninsula. It is one of the leading centers for Arabian wildlife conservation.
  • Notable species that the zoo helps protect include the Arabian Oryx, the Arabian Leopard, and the Arabian Tahr. The zoo has successfully bred these animals in captivity and reintroduced them to the wild, contributing to their survival.

Diverse Animal Exhibits

  • The zoo houses a wide variety of animals from around the world, including African lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippos, baboons, elephants, and numerous bird species.

The zoo's Safari Village gives visitors a chance to see animals such as giraffes, zebras, and ostriches in more open, naturalistic enclosures, where they roam freely.

Safari and Interactive Experiences

  • Visitors can experience a safari-style tour through the zoo, where they can see animals in large, open spaces that mimic their natural habitats.
  • The zoo also offers animal encounters, where guests can interact with certain species in a more hands-on way, such as feeding giraffes or meeting smaller animals in the petting zoo area.

 Children’s Zone

  • Al Ain Zoo is a family-friendly destination with a dedicated children's zoo, where kids can interact with farm animals like goats, sheep, and rabbits.

The zoo also has playgrounds and interactive exhibits designed to engage young minds and educate them about the importance of wildlife conservation.

Educational Programs and Exhibits:

  • The zoo offers various educational programs for schools, children, and the general public, focusing on the importance of animal conservation, ecosystems, and environmental protection.
  • Interactive exhibits and informative signage throughout the zoo help visitors learn about the animals, their natural habitats, and conservation efforts.

Nature Trails and Scenic Views:

  • Al Ain Zoo is set against the stunning backdrop of Jebel Hafeet, the highest mountain in Abu Dhabi, and its surroundings are beautifully landscaped with gardens, walking trails, and picnic areas.
  • These nature trails offer visitors the chance to relax and enjoy the outdoors while observing wildlife in a more serene environment.

State-of-the-Art Veterinary Facility:

The zoo features a modern veterinary hospital that provides medical care to the animals. It also conducts important research into animal health and wildlife management, with a particular focus on endangered species.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices

  • Al Ain Zoo is committed to sustainability, using solar energy, water conservation methods, and recycling initiatives. These efforts align with the UAE's broader environmental goals.

The Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort:

Al Ain Zoo is expanding into a major wildlife park and eco-tourism resort, offering additional wildlife experiences, nature walks, and accommodations for guests looking to experience a more immersive visit.

Best Time to Visit

Al Ain experiences hot temperatures, especially during the summer months, so the best time to visit is between November and March, when the weather is milder. Early morning or late afternoon visits are ideal to avoid the peak heat of midday.
